At the end of last year freezer trawler Oshiveli sailed from Vigo for Walvis Bay, the first new trawler to fish for three species in the Southern African Development Community.

Built by Armón Vigo for Namibian company Tunacor Ltd, Oshiveli is designed to operate both as a factory freezer vessel and to land fresh fish for processing ashore.

Tunacor went to leading Spanish supplier Kinarca for the new trawler’s refrigeration equipment and there are three independent installations on board. The main installation for freezing in tunnels, plate freezers and for storage in fish holds uses an indirect refrigeration system working with R-507A as the refrigerant.

The main installation has a centralised machine room in which there are three independent compressor units, two of them to meet the needs of the tunnels and plate freezers and one for the fish holds and the tweendeck with a total volume of 910 cubic metres at a temperature -25ºC.

Two compressor units are Mycom 160 VLD screw compressors and the third by Mycom 160 VSD. Each compressor has its own economiser to boost its performance.

Oil cooling is by thermosiphon, which ensures high reliability and requires very little maintenance. A programmable automatic system is responsible for management, with operations and sequences necessary carried out via a touch screen.

Oshiveli’s air conditioning consists of a compressor unit with open pistons, a direct system working with R-507A. An independent system of air conditioning serves to the engine control room and frequency converter room.

In addition, Kinarca set up a refrigeration unit for the provision space, for frozen products at -18° C and fresh goods at 0° C. This installation consists of a piston compressor, a seawater condenser with pump and cubic evaporators.
