A newly opened ice plant will benefit 600 fishermen in Labasa, Fiji, reports local press.

The plant has the capacity to produce 1,500kg of crushed ice in 24 hours and an ice storage capacity of three tonnes.

The plant was opened by fisheries minister Osea Naiqamu, who said the initiative was part of the government's assistance in delivering help to rural areas. He said that fishermen will utilise the ice to improve their fishing business through sales of well-preserved high quality fish for optimum returns.

According to the minister, the ice supply support services will not only encourage value adding to fish production, but also open new fish marketing arrangements for fishermen to diversify into fishing for deep-water fish.
