Construction of HB Grandi’s new cold store at its Nordurgardur site in Reykjavík is going well and work is on schedule.

HB Grandi‘s production manager Torfi Th. Thorsteinsson has said that the cold store is expected to be operational in May as planned
The contractors handling the new building are ÍAV and Kælismidjan Frost, who have a team of 40 working for them to get the 3,800m2 cold store up and running. At the time of writing, work was in progress to erect the steel for the first floor, the outer cladding for the freezing and grading area, and to set up the freezing units.
The new cold store is much needed and will solve many of the problems HB Grandi has faced in terms of cold storage space. The company currently rents cold storage at Örfirisey, and frozen products from both the factory trawlers and the Reykjavík production plant are frequently stored in freezing containers or in rented space both in Iceland and overseas.
The formal opening of the cold store is planned for 2 June, which is also Seamen’s Day in Iceland - an occasion to honour those who make their living from the sea.
