A free online health service has been launched to help people working in small businesses in higher-risk sectors in England – including fishing - who suffer from work-related ill health.

Fishing is one of the UKs most dangerous occupations, with long hours, extreme weather and working with heavy machinery contributing to the high mortality rate in fishermen. There is also a risk of asthma and allergies due to modern fish filleting machines and high pressure hoses that throw high levels of fish protein into the air, which can be inhaled causing health problems in workers.

The Government-funded Health for Work Adviceline offers free, tailored occupational health advice and support to managers or employees in organisations who are experiencing problems with physical or mental ill health, via telephone, live web-based chat and over 200 easy-to-access guides.

Advice can be sought by calling Freephone 0800 0 77 88 44, through an extensive, intelligent, online knowledge base, or online communication with a contact centre by submitting a question to the support team, or ‘chatting’ directly with a member of the team.
