French trawlerman, Alain Rico, attended the World Fishing Exhibition in Vigo and was enthusiastic about the advantages of his recently installed Wassp Multibeam Sonar.

Speaking to a number of European fishermen visiting the Sodena/Wassp stand, Mr Rico was happy to tell them of his own recent experiences.

"The trawler fleet average catch is really low due to bad weather conditions and small schools, however, while I caught 5t of sardine/anchovy, the other skippers only landed 2t," he said.

Using the wide 120 degree beam coverage from port to starboard allows this 23 year fishing veteran from the South of France to not only track the schools more accurately as they pass under the vessel but map them onto his Sodena plotter as well.

"I have worked for a long time with an Omnidirectional Sonar but now, with Wassp, I’ve changed my practice and I move more to port and starboard as I am now able to locate the fish schools," said Mr Rico.

Greg Fletcher from Electronic Navigation Ltd, manufacturer of the Wassp Multibeam Sonar, reports that these comments from Mr Rico are typical of a growing number of satisfied customers from around the world.

"Multibeam systems have historically only been available to Hydrographic companies and Government departments but with our new technology and production processes, we have made it available to the commercial fishing industry and is priced accordingly. It delivers very real and tangible benefits to those fishermen looking to improve their acoustic equipment and accuracy when mapping of the seafloor, minimise damage to trawl gear and increase their vessels profitability", he said.

"When a fisherman with the experience that Alain has tells us that the Wassp is increasing his daily catch rate by 20%, we take this as confirmation that the product is working really well!" Mr Fletcher concludes.
