Described by Director Hallvard Slettevoll as a breakthrough in technology, the new system manages to combine the unique features of pure sinusoidal electric power, both towards the main switchboard, and to the electric motors and other electrical consumers, with minimum cost and space.

Sinusoidal approch

Stadt has developed the idea of a unique solution based on sinusoidal-pure electric power in close cooperation with the Swedish company NFO Drives AB. The two companies can offer state-of-the-art electric motor drives to the shipping and offshore industry that are free from electric noise and pollution. The power range available covers from less than 1 kW, 220 V up to 25,000 kW (25 MW), 15 kV.

Typically four generators, one or two main propellers, side thrusters and other heavy consumers, such as winches, compressors etc can be integrated into the Stadt full electric propulsion system.

Stascho for fishing

The new Stadt DE propulsion system, called Stascho, is ideal for fishing vessels, seismic vessels, and other special offshore vessels due to its compact size, low noise profile and moderate cost. It also gives huge benefits regarding pollution from NOx, CO2 and soot from exhaust, and, last but not least, a major reduction in fuel consumption. All in all, a very environmentally friendly ship propulsion system that also can be easily adapted to combinations of gas and fuel cell power generation onboard a ship.

High energy flexibility is another major advantage with the full electric Stadt concept, where the available energy can be used to whatever purpose required onboard the ship at any time.

Stadt AS has worked on developing its own electric propulsion system for ship and offshore since 1986, and is one of the pioneers in electric propulsion systems for ship.

A total package responsibility from generators to electric switchboards, control systems and watercooled electric propulsion motors is part of the scope from Stadt, which also has a close cooperation with several manufacturers of propeller systems that become part of the new Stadt DE Stascho concept.

Fewer parts, less complexity

Hallvard Slettevoll explains that the main reason for the success of this new system, is a dramatic reduction in the number of components and the complexity. This has resulted in a cost saving solution, and opens a new way of thinking- especially for fishing vessels which, so far, have not used electric propulsion.

Stadt has already, in just a short period of time, signed several contracts and believes that its new system will open totally new markets for electric propulsion.
