On 19 April, Iceland’s President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson presented 3X with the President of Iceland’s Award for Export Achievement at a ceremony at Bessastaðir, his official residence, Company owners Albert Marzelíus Högnason and Jóhann Jónasson accepted the award.

First presented in 1989, the award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement in strengthening the nation’s export sector. Award regulations stipulate that it should be presented to companies or individuals, Icelandic or foreign, for successful results in exporting Icelandic goods or services to international markets. When choosing the annual recipient, factors such as value-added exports, share of exports in overall sales, and marketing in new markets are weighed.

Exporting experience and knowledge

Valur Valsson, chair of the evaluation committee, said during the presentation ceremony that “3X receives the award for the excellent results in sales and marketing of specially designed equipment and solutions for the food industry that it has attained over a short time. 3X is a good representative of those companies in Iceland that base their operations on adapting Icelandic knowledge and expertise to the needs of global markets.”

Founded in Ísafjörður in 1994, 3X initially focused on designing and manufacturing stainless-steel equipment and providing services for the local fisheries industry, particularly shrimp processing. The company began exporting to Canada in 1998, and since then the number of employees has grown ten-fold, mostly in Ísafjörður as well as in the company’s sales offices in Canada, England and Reykjavík.

Valsson pointed out that product development has always played an important role in the company’s success. “While 3X has sold its products to most of the largest fisheries companies in Iceland, it has now reached the point where over half of its revenue is generated from exports. However, this is just the beginning of 3X’s expansion. Management is confident that its products and solutions can fit well into other sectors of the food industry, for example meat, fruit and vegetables, and marketing efforts are now being focused in this direction.”
