Extensive operational testing has confirmed that the M/V ‘Dina Star’, the world’s first vessel equipped with ABB’s DC Onboard Grid system and powered by Caterpillar engines, has achieved significant fuel and noise reduction.

The measurements and tests, conducted by Pon Power in collaboration with ABB, on the platform supply vessel identified reduction of specific fuel oil consumption of around 15% - up to 27% in some operational conditions. The vessel is equipped with four Caterpillar 3516 main engines mounted on Pon Power’s GenFlex system (and a smaller, C32 auxiliary engine).

Ole Knarberg, Commercial Director of Pon Power Scandinavia, says that these are the first documented results from a vessel outfitted with ABB’s Onboard DC Grid system, which allows engines to run at variable speed for top fuel efficiency at each load level.

“While we were confident that the tests would go well, the results exceeded expectations,” he says. “The tests prove that ABB’s DC Onboard grid system, together with the right engine package, represents a genuine opportunity for owners seeking to reduce fuel consumption and corresponding emissions.”

ABB's Onboard DC Grid distributes power through a single DC circuit providing significant power savings while simultaneously improving the safety and redundancy when compared with traditional AC systems. By distributing electricity in DC, the system allows the operation of engines at variable speeds, reducing fuel consumption, and enabling improved dynamic response of the engines.

Pon Power and ABB also measured the Onboard DC Grid’s effect on engine room noise levels. Tests showed 30% noise reduction, contributing to improved working conditions aboard the vessel. "Noise and vibration reduction has already been a focus of ours for years with our GenFlex Design solution,” says Mr Knarberg. “The ability now to document this level of fuel efficiency alongside the noise reduction is a very important new step for us as a power solution provider, especially for our customers operating in challenging conditions."

Mr Knarberg is confident that the success of the project will encourage other owners to work with Pon Power and ABB to implement more DC Onboard Grid systems in the future.
