A 16-metre squid-fishing boat operating out of Port St Francis, near Jeffrey''s Bay in South Africa''s Eastern Cape, has been repowered with a pair of Perkins Sabre M215C engines in a bid to achieve greater all-round
At the same time, the owners of Sangoma opted to upgrade her old generator set with a new Perkins Sabre 4TGM genset engine.
Sangoma's builders and owners, John Butt and Taffy Goldstone, work a 21-day fishing cycle throughout the squid season that leaves no scope for engine failure or excessive maintenance downtime. "Our aim is to get to the fishing grounds in the shortest possible time, to maximise the time we spend catching and processing the fish, and then return to shore as quickly as possible," said Taffy Goldstone.
The 215hp, turbocharged and intercooled six-cylinder, six-litre engines, which develop their maximum power at a comfortable low-revving 2,500rpm, are designed to reduce the maximum cylinder pressure while optimising low speed engine performance. This makes a significant contribution to the engines' reliability especially as Sangoma hauls an average of between six and 12 tonnes of squid on each trip, with a crew of 20.
The 4TGM genset engine is equally hardworking. It is used to run a blast
