Denmark-based filtration experts C.C. Jensen A/S has developed a new filtration unit, in collaboration with DMA Sorption ApS, which they say guarantees that the oil content is below 15 parts per million (ppm) throughout the lifespan of the filter elements.
The International Maritime Organization stipulates a maximum oil content of 15 ppm for bilgewater if it is to be pumped out in open waters. Jensen says that most ocean-going vessels operate one or two bilgewater separation systems to meet this requirement: a 100 ppm and a 15 ppm system. However, more often than not the 15 ppm separator will only perform to standard if recently cleaned and in perfect trim.
The new CJCâ„¢ OilAbsorb Filter, based on a specially developed multiple layer cartridge filter insert, patented by DMA, is a simple, yet very effective principle which absorbs oils from practically any kind of polluted water passing through the filter unit. It reduces oil content to values as low as 5 ppm.
It is Lloyd's Register type approved and is simply to install in the engine room, preferably after the 15 ppm separator. It requires very little floor space (less than half a square metre). It is virtually maintenance free, apart from the periodical replacement of the filter inserts, since it has no moving or electronic components. Jensen say it is also very economical in operation as the special filter inserts have a very high oil absorption/adsorption capacity. Their absorption capability remains virtually constant throughout their lifespan. The oil holding capacity of the filter inserts should suffice for some three months of operation under average conditions. The new filter also prevents oil pollution of the overboard system in case of breakdown or malfunction of the bilgewater separator, thus ensuring a stable and reliable operation of the oil discharge monitor.
