South Korean engine manufacturer Hyundai SeasAll has introduced a heavy duty diesel engine aimed at semi-displacement work and fishing boats.

Rated at 500hp, the L500 is designed to operate for uninterrupted and unlimited use at full power. This new engine features electronic injectors which allow it to meet the strictest emission standards and to deliver heavy duty power and torque over a wide range of engine speeds.

Exclusive UK and Ireland distributor for Hyundai SeasAll is engine, generator and gearbox specialist, WaterMota, whose MD, Mike Beacham, welcomed the new engine.

“Modern technology is constantly moving on and Hyundai SeasAll as a company is very forward thinking with design technology devised from that already proven in the automobile industry. Hyundai SeasAll can build on this to produce extremely advanced engines. These engines are possibly the most advanced electronic engines of their type,” he said.

Based on a 12.7 litre block, the L500 has been developed for reliability by using simplified design. There is a waste gate turbocharger and an integrated oil cooler in the cylinder block. The oil, fuel and seawater pumps are all gear driven rather than using belt drive and the monosteel pistons are gallery cooled. Easy servicing of the engine is assisted by such features as the easily accessible seawater pump and the oil cartridge. Both the air and the oil filters are of the washable and re-useable type and the engine is fitted with an electric oil change pump to facilitate maintenance.

The engine is a four stroke, four valves per cylinder unit with the valves driven by an overhead camshaft. Fresh water cooling is used and the air charge passes through an inter-cooler. The bore and stroke are 130mm by 160mm and the engine is designed to produce its maximum torque of 230kg/m at 1,200rpm. The maximum rpm is 1,800 at full load and the maximum fuel consumption is 88 litres per hour.

Designed for stable performance at high load, the engine responds well to sudden load changes. It also delivers powerful acceleration and rapid reaction to command.

First deliveries of this new engine are available in the Korean market with the UK and international markets to be targeted later this year.

Ted Fagerburg, Director of Hyundai SeasAll International Operations said that its optimal engine combustion technology, with CRDi, produces the best fuel efficiency of its kind.

Each engine is delivered with a smart self-diagnosis system and Engine Operating Indicator. This will diagnose and control, using an audio alarm and LCD display alerting the operator to any problems.

And he stated all the new engines from Hyundai can comply with Tier III with certification depending on various countries’ requirements. The L500 will be RINA certified, as is the H380.
