PrimeServ Frederikshavn has successfully completed another major main engine overhaul aboard a large, Westrybflot-owned factory freezer trawler.

“Staryy Arbat”, arrival at the Service Center quay on 19 November

On this occasion, the 1987-built “Staryy Arbat”, the second sister of four large fishing vessels owned and operated by Westrybflot of Kaliningrad, Russia, chose to dock in Denmark for a major overhaul of both of its main engines.

This overhaul took place just a little over a year after her identical 104 metre sister vessel “Lazurnyy” (built in 1988), visited Denmark in December 2005 and underwent a similar main engine overhaul at the MAN Diesel | PrimeServ Frederikshavn Service Center.

This time, the “Staryy Arbat” arrived on 19 November and went back in service with its two newly overhauled SEMT Pielstick engines by 13 December 2006. MAN Diesel was the main contractor for the job, with docking and painting of the vessel handled by, and in cooperation with, Orskov Yard A/S.

The “Staryy Arbat” is powered by two 3,500BHP, six-cylinder SEMT Pielstick PC 2-5 main engines, built under license by Russki Diesel as type 6CHN 40/46. Via a Valmet main gearbox, each engine drives a 1,500KVA shaft alternator and a four-bladed CP Propeller.

In short, the overhaul of both main engines included:

• Cylinder heads

• Pistons

• Connecting rods

• Cylinder liners

• Fuel injection pumps

• Fuel injection nozzles

• Turbochargers

• Main bearings

Frederikshavn was selected by Westrybflot in connection with its scheduled dockings. “We cooperated with Orskov Yard on the docking and offered an attractive, complete, tailored ship/engine overhaul package”, says Claus Bak Pedersen, Project Manager at PrimeServ Frederikshavn's Service Center, Denmark. He adds: “The competition in after-sales service and repair is tough, and we are very pleased again to have served Westrybflot with a West-European package – attractive both with regards to quality and duration.”

After completion of the job, “Staryy Arbat” returned to Kaliningrad to take onboard fishing gear and the remaining crew. During the overhaul and docking, “Staryy Arbat” had a reduced crew of 47, but when fully operational the vessel requires a crew of 72.
