The United States is leading the world in eco-labelled fish, pushing the UK into second and Switzerland into third places respectively.

November figures from international non-profit the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) show America pulling ahead with a record 93 fish products in stores nationwide bearing the MSC eco-label for sustainably-sourced fish (compared with 85 in the UK and 69 in Switzerland). The blue fish eco-label is the easiest way for shoppers to make the best environmental choice in seafood.

Rupert Howes, Chief Executive of the MSC says: "I think this is fantastic news for American consumers - the choice in sustainable seafood has never been better from fish nuggets to rock lobster. It's good to see the American market for eco-labelled fish expanding so fast and gives the American people a chance to vote with their wallets."

At the moment, the league table stands as:

1) USA - 93 products

2) UK - 85 products
