Due to the expense associated with the transport and disposal of used EPS (Expanded Polystyrene or Styrofoam) fish boxes, many companies are investigating whether cheaper waste management alternatives exist.

RUNI has been trading compacted EPS blocks for several years and has a wide net of customers requesting the material.

Compacted EPS is a valuable material for recycling. The blocks are re-ground, extruded and converted into new plastic pellets. These pellets are used in the production of new plastic materials such as coat hangers, DVD covers, and other cheap plastic items.

The RUNI SK370 compacts the EPS fish boxes into blocks with a density of approximately 350kg/m3, which makes it possible to ship 22t in a 40ft container.

Staff empty the fish and ice out of the boxes place the boxes directly on a conveyor belt leading to the RUNI compactor. If the compactor is located close to where the boxes are emptied, staff can simply push the boxes along a pair of rails or a roller conveyor. The compactor will then start and stop automatically, as necessary.

As these blocks are in demand, RUNI has developed a concept that enables fish-packers with 70t of EPS per year (for example, 500 salmon boxes per day) or more, to receive a SK370 compactor delivered and installed, and the opportunity to pay for the machine over three years with their waste EPS boxes.
