Online Telematics, in partnership with S M Group (Europe) Ltd, are offering a GPS-based intruder warning device linked to a mobile phone to provide alerts by automatic text message and also track a boat if it has been moved from pre-set coordinates.

Called Samtrac, it has 12 sensors which can also be interfaced with other optional, external sensors.

The system can be remotely 'armed' by the owner. When a sensor is triggered a text message alerts the owner with specific information relating to the active sensor. The integral GPS tracking system can detect unauthorised movement and plot the boat's journey which is shown on a Web-based map. Texting the vessel will also return on-shore locations in the UK if the boat has been towed away on land. Other countries are promised.

It can also support internet/email access via a GPRS link and the GPS data can feed navigating or charting systems or software installed on a PC/PDA.

Wired and wireless sensors can be attached to hatches and doors windows and smoke alarms, microwave movement detector, pressure mats, strobe and siren can show intruder presence. The system can be turned on and off from a key fob. There is an internal vibration sensor and an output alarm circuit which supports a siren and it can also immobilise the engine remotely. Critical points such as the bilge pump can be put on the system.

The company says Samtrac also offers an additional complete vessel management tool to log information such as engine running hours, speed and distance travelled. Data is logged and can be retrieved remotely via a mobile phone or a computer. It runs off a 12vdc supply and a solar panel can be mounted for trickle charging. It has a 'phone' SIM card and the three-year communications plan includes most, if not all, communications charges, the company says.
