Last year was a special year for Naust Marine as the company installed electrical winch systems in one of the smallest trawlers and also some of the biggest trawlers in the world.
Last October, the factory vessel Willem van der Zwan was delivered from the Scheldendorf shipyard in Holland after major rebuilding and retrofit. The vessel is 142m long and is one of the biggest fishing vessels in the world.
The company Willem van der Zwan also owns other large trawlers Alida and Franziska. These vessels are all equipped with electrical winches supplied by Naust Marine, including all controls and ATW system for automatic control of the towing winches. The winch systems in the vessels consist of the following winches:
- 2 x towing winches with 380kW DC motors giving maximum pull of approximately 95 tons
- 2 x net drums with 250kW AC motors giving maximum pull of approximately 50 tons
- 2 x Gilson winches with 100kW AC motors giving maximum pull of approximately 42 tons
- 1 x top-line winch with 260kW DC motor giving maximum pull of approximately 85 tons
From April to June 2009 three new-built trawlers arrived in Iceland from Taiwan. The trawlers are all 28.95m long, which gives them the advantage, according to Icelandic regulations, of being able to fish closer to the coast then bigger vessels. All winches are electrical and were delivered by Naust Marine, with all controls and functions the same as the big trawlers, including a fully automatic ATW towing system. The system consists of 11 winches in each vessel where the towing winches are with 80kW AC motors, giving a maximum pull of 23 tons. Other winches are:
- 4 x Sweep-line winches
- 2 x Gilsons
- 1 x out hauling
- 1 x cod-end (dumping)
- 1 x net-drums
The auxiliary winches have electrical AC motors ranging from 30kW-45kW and give pull from 8-18 tons.
There is increasing demand for electrical winches, as ship owners are searching for ways to save fuel. With electrical towing winches and the ATW system, Naust Marine says it is possible to save 10-15% of the fuel compared to similar winches with hydraulic drives.
Other obvious advantages are:
- Little maintenance
- Simple installation
- Easy to use
- Silence onboard the vessel
