Scottish Sea Farms has appointed a new head of sustainability and development to help the company minimise its environmental impact and maximise its social and economic value.
Anne Anderson, former chief officer of compliance & beyond at the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and most recently sustainability director at the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO), takes up the newly created role as of 29 March 2021.
“After two non-stop years at the SSPO, during which I achieved what I set out to do – namely, help the sector identify what would be required for it to develop and grow sustainably – I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and help deliver those advances,” said Ms Anderson.
Ms Anderson’s immediate focus will be on rationalising a number of discrete company initiatives into a single sustainability strategy and enhancing the company’s social, economic and environmental contribution.
Over the years Scottish Sea Farms has worked on reducing its use of use of polystyrene, recycled hatchery waste into fertiliser, deployed greener building practices and explored hybrid power. Managing director Jim Gallagher said the time was now right to bring in a dedicated sustainability champion. “Meeting the growing need for food without compromising animal welfare or the local environment has long been the key driver of our business,” he said.
