Construction of Sri Lanka’s largest fisheries harbour in Dickowita is nearing completion.

The harbour is expected to be declared open within the next 6 months.

The new harbour will consist of fuel stations, ice storage facilities, refrigerators, deep freezers and adequate anchorage.

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development said that a special committee has been appointed to supply all of the required infrastructure facilities, in order to overcome the current shortages.

The harbour premises comprise 8.1ha and the harbour basin is around 11.7ha. It was being constructed under a loan scheme provided by the government of The Netherlands.

The harbour will also have enough space for anchoring 515 fishing vessels. The entrance to the harbour will be expanded to 70m from the present length of 50m.

A fish canning factory and a fish market have also been constructed. Water tanks, an electricity generation plant and shopping mall will also be built.
