The Spanish''s Secretary of Fishery, Miguel Arias Canete, has said that the Government considers the proposals ''very negative and very unbalanced'' and could potentially damage the Spanish fishing sector.

Arias Canete has said that the proposals included in the CFP reform did not take into account the efforts of fleet reduction that Spain has already completed, writes Pilar Santamaria.

The fishery sector, trade unions and representatives from the coastal Autonomus communities have joined together to form a Committee.

This group will help the Government to develop alternative proposals to the ones recently announced by the EC. In addition, Spain will continue to look for support from other European countries.

Galician secretary of Fishery, Enrique Cesar Lopez Veiga has criticised how the proposal has been presented to the public. He has also said that the proposals are technically and legally wrong. According to him, the new CFP "can be interpreted as an aggression towards Spain".

Lopez Veiga has declared that Spain has been very strict following the MAGPs and has already reduced its fleet..

He criticised the bureaucracy surrounding the Commission's proposal and said that radical reform does not necessary mean right reform.

Enrique Cesar Lopez Veiga has said the new proposals . divides Europe instead of integrating it.

Veiga said that if the new CFP was to go ahead , Spain would loose 20% of employment in the fishery sector.

Spanish fisheries organisations and trade unions have also demanded to see European Commissioner Franz Fischler sacked from his position
