Icelandic ship design company Skipasýn ehf. has developed a design for a 66 metre filleter freezer trawler. A contract has been signed for the first vessel, Baldvin Njálsson, to be commissioned for Icelandic fishing company Nesfiskur in late 2021, ready to start fishing in 2022.

Skipasýn presents filleter freezer design

Skipasýn has developed a 66 metre filleter freezer trawler design for Nesfiskur

The design layout includes two fish hold levels for cargo on pallets, in addition to mechanised cargo handling systems. The design with its unique operational and production characteristics stands out from similar vessel designs in this size bracket by offering a bollard pull of 67 tonnes, with a 580m2 processing area and a 1720m3 fish hold

A construction-friendly design approach enable the reduction of capital construction costs.

An array of design innovations in hull form and propulsion systems are intended to minimise operational fuel costs, and a similar set of design systems were previously introduced for 50 metre trawlers designed by Skipasýn, which started fishing in 2018.

According to the company’s report presented at The Seafood Conference Iceland in November, each of these new vessels consumes 35-40% less fuel for a similar catch volume, in comparison to previous similar-sized vessels operated by the same shipowners.

Skipasýn has also developed concepts based on the P6616 N design with options for RSW preliminary cooling of the catch, a single-level fishroom and a 15 tonne/day capacity fishmeal plant for discardless production.
