The project is an initiative of the SEASL aimed at promoting sustainability, co-financed by the National Fisheries Institute Crab Council (NFI CC). Monterey Bay Aquarium’s ratings system helps consumers make informed choices about how seafood is sourced.

Ed Rhodes, executive director of the NFI CC, congratulated SEASL saying that the council was proud to support the association’s efforts. In a statement he said that “the dedicated FIP managers on the ground in Sri Lanka and our committed companies have worked tirelessly to improve the ecological status of the stock, advance its management and improve the economic equity of the fishery.”

The FIP commenced at the end of 2013, with an initial assessment of the fishery. The results of the assessment were used to plan activities to improve the biological and ecological status of the fishery and introduce management measures to ensure that the fishery is managed sustainably.
