Vietnam’s shrimp industry contributed around 35–40% of the seafood industry’s total export value in 2024

Vietnam currently ranks as the world’s third-largest fisheries exporter, accounting for approximately 7% of the global market share. This year, the sector is targeting an export turnover of $10.5 billion, marking a 4.3% year-on-year growth.

In volume terms, the country produced a total output of more than 9.6 million tonnes of fisheries and aquaculture products – a 2% year-on-year increase. Of this, its farmed production rose sharply from 4.1 to 5.7 million tonnes, while capture fisheries landings rose from 3.6 to 3.8 million tonnes.

Informa Markets highlights that Vietnam’s shrimp industry contributed around 35–40% of the sector’s total export value. In 2024 alone, this trade generated approximately $4 billion – a 16.7% increase compared to 2023. By the end of 2024, the total shrimp farming area nationwide reached about 749,700 hectares. Notably, whiteleg shrimp farming output recorded an impressive 82% increase during this period.

The event organiser said that as a cornerstone of Vietnam’s agri-export portfolio and a growing contributor to national economic output, its seafood industry, particularly shrimp, is undergoing significant transformation.

“Investments in modern farming models and technology are driving the creation of more sustainable value. However, to maintain this growth momentum and effectively tackle challenges related to environmental concerns, market access, and digital transformation, the sector needs bold breakthroughs fuelled by knowledge-sharing and international collaboration,” it said.

In response to this shifting landscape, Aquaculture Vietnam 2026 and VietShrimp Asia 2026 will be co-located at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Centre (SECC), Ho Chi Minh City, on from 11-13 March 2026.
