Planet Tracker has released a major update to its open-access Seafood Database, giving investors and lenders a faster way to identify, quantify and prioritise seafood-related sustainability risks within their portfolios.
The database now covers 300 seafood-exposed companies spanning the global value chain, including fishing, aquaculture, feed production, processing, branding and distribution. It connects company-level sourcing data with independently derived environmental metrics, highlighting exposure to overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, destructive practices and broader ocean health risks.

“Seafood is one of the least transparent yet most systemically important commodity sectors for the ocean economy,” said Francois Mosnier, Head of Nature at Planet Tracker.
“With this update, we are giving investors a way to see, in minutes, where seafood related risks sit in their portfolios and where targeted engagement can drive the biggest change.”

At the centre of the update is a new Portfolio function designed specifically for financial institutions. The tool enables users to quickly pinpoint which holdings drive the greatest risks, where those risks are concentrated and which companies should be prioritised for engagement.
Planet Tracker’s analysis reveals uneven sustainability performance across the sector. Governance, stock sustainability and compliance rank highest, with around 20–30% of companies rated ‘Good’ in these categories. However, fishing practices and transparency lag significantly, with roughly half of companies rated ‘Poor’ and fewer than 10% achieving a ‘Good’ rating.
The organisation warns that these issues are financially material. Overfishing, illegal activity, destructive methods and weak traceability can create regulatory, operational and reputational risks across seafood supply chains, potentially affecting long-term profitability and asset values.
The updated Seafood Database is freely available online and forms part of Planet Tracker’s broader suite of seafood analytics tools.
