The UK fish and chip sector is set to celebrate its rising talent, with the shortlisting of five new businesses for the prestigious Newcomer of the Year award at the 2026 National Fish & Chip Awards. The accolade recognises chippies that have opened their doors since January 2024 and have already demonstrated outstanding quality, operational excellence and industry know-how.

The 2026 shortlist spans the UK, highlighting innovative approaches to the nation’s favourite takeaway. Bristol’s Fisk & Frite, Sutton Coldfield’s Skippers in the West Midlands, Blackpool’s The Cottage, Inverness-shire’s Monster Fish & Chips Co., and South Queensferry’s The Crab & Lobster Fish Shack in Edinburgh & The Lothians are all in the running to take over the baton from 2025 winner, Mackerel Sky in Stamford Bridge, Yorkshire.
Judged against rigorous industry benchmarks, entrants are evaluated on criteria including produce quality, sustainability practices, customer service, business operations, and the final product itself. This approach ensures that winners set new standards for the wider seafood and fish frying sector.
Andrew Crook, President of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), praised the category as a celebration of passion and innovation in the trade. “New entrants bring fresh ideas and energy, which are essential for the ongoing growth and evolution of our industry,” he said. “We’re excited to champion these businesses as they establish themselves in the sector and raise the bar for quality and professionalism.”
Sponsoring the award, Frymax UK Brand & Marketing Manager Andrew Marriott emphasised the importance of nurturing newcomers for the health of the industry. “New entrants drive growth and innovation, which is crucial for the future prosperity of the fish and chip trade. This award celebrates businesses that combine great products with commercial acumen from day one.”
Past winner Mackerel Sky’s owners, Katrina and Ali Hasanbasoglu, also offered advice to the hopefuls: “Implement industry best practices, seek guidance when needed, and fry with passion. Remember, you’re only as good as your last portion of fish and chips.”
The next stage in the competition involves mystery shop visits, after which the top three finalists will be announced. The winner will be revealed at the awards ceremony on 25 February 2026 at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, London.
