UK seafood industry leader and lifelong advocate Jimmy Buchan has been formally admitted to the “Freedom of the City of London”, following his recent admittance as a Liveryman in the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers. The honour recognises Buchan’s decades of dedication to the seafood industry, from his early days at sea to his leadership in shaping the future of the supply chain.

The ceremony took place at London’s historic Guildhall.

Buchan became a Liveryman in March 2025, and his admittance to the Freedom of the City marks a significant milestone in a career defined by service, innovation and passion for the seafood trade.

From his beginnings as a fisherman and skipper, he has spent a lifetime immersed in the seafood sector. He later transitioned into the supply chain, where his expertise and advocacy have helped elevate standards and promote sustainability. For the past eight years, Buchan has served as Chief Executive Officer of the Scottish Seafood Association, representing processors and suppliers across Scotland and championing the journey of seafood from sea to plate.

“Being admitted to the Freedom of the City of London is a deeply humbling experience,” Buchan said. “It’s a recognition not just of my own journey, but of the incredible people across the seafood sector who work tirelessly to bring our world-class produce to market. I’m proud to represent them and to continue advocating for the future of our industry.”

The Worshipful Company of Fishmongers, one of the oldest Livery Companies in the City of London, has supported the fishing industry for centuries. Admission as a Liverman and the granting of the Freedom of the City are among the highest honours in the trade, reserved for individuals who have made outstanding contributions to their field.
