The Shrimp Welfare Project is pioneering the use of free electric stunners developed by Optimar to large-scale farms to help ensure ethical welfare standards.
The initiative aims to distribute 24 humane stunners worldwide by the end of 2025 to farms committing to stunning a minimum of 1,800 tonnes of shrimp per year and demonstrating a dedication to improving welfare practices.

Optimar has been a partner of the Shrimp Welfare Project since 2023 and has already joined forces on several initiatives. “We are really impressed by how the team has raised awareness about the welfare of shrimps in the slaughtering process,” said sales manager, Mårten Jørgensen.
These state-of-the-art stunners are designed to sedate shrimp rapidly, significantly reducing stress. The endeavour highlights the growing recognition within the aquaculture industry of the need for humane slaughter methods, especially as traditional techniques, such as immersion in ice-water slurry, face increasing criticism for being inhumane.
“Collaborating with Optimar has enabled us to successfully implement humane slaughter practices on several farms already, with even more projects currently underway,” said Krzysztof Wojtas, chief programmes officer at the Shrimp Welfare Project.
The Shrimp Welfare Project has already made significant strides, providing stunning equipment to producers in Latin America, Southeast Asia and South Asia.
“We are very pleased with the progress we’ve made and the valuable insights we’ve gained from producers already using the stunners,” concluded Wojtas.
