Exports of Norwegian salmon in November totalled NOK 3.1 billion (€391.7 million/$528 million), an increase of 38% or NOK 853 million (€107.8 million/$145.3 million) compared to November 2009.

The record figure for exports set just one month previously was beaten by NOK 66 million (€8.3 million/$11.2 million).

Paul Aandahl, market analyst with the Norwegian Seafood Export Council said the growth in salmon exports is attributable to growth in volume combined with increased prices.

“The upward trend in prices is due to growing global demand for salmon and reduced competition,” he said.

The average export price for fresh whole Norwegian salmon in November was NOK 36.15 (€4.57/$6.16) per kg, down by NOK 0.66 (€0.08/$0.11) from the previous month but still up by NOK 7.92 (€1/$1.35) compared to November last year.

In November, the volume of salmon exports to eastern Europe increased by 3,320 tonnes and to Asia by 2,916 tonnes. Growth in exports to the EU, which account for about two-thirds of all Norwegian salmon exports, stood at 1,562 tonnes.

Exports to the US in November declined by 79 tonnes compared to the same month last year.

The volume of exports to France in November totalled 11,415 tonnes, an increase of 5% compared to November last year. The volume of exports to Russia grew by 50%, making Russia the second biggest export market in November.

Exports of Norwegian fjord trout in November totalled NOK 198 million (€25 million/$33.7 million), up by 24% or NOK 39 million (€4.9 million/$6.6 million) compared to November 2009.

Russia is Norway’s most important export market for fjord trout, accounting for 52% of total exports.

China continues to show strong growth and is now Norway’s second most important export market for fjord trout. Since November last year, exports to China have increased five-fold.
