Nofima, Norway’s food research institute, is increasing its research efforts in catch handling and capture based aquaculture of cod.
It’s able to do this because the draft national budget for 2014 proposes to increase Nofima’s appropriation by NOK 10m as part of its package of measures for the cod industry.
Around half of this appropriation will accelerate research efforts and the other half will be put towards a collaborative project with the Norwegian Seafood Council to improve strategic marketing for whitefish.
Nofima is currently working on a new business plan with provisions from the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs (its largest shareholder) to ensure that the cod industry will benefit from its scientific effort in the long-term.
