French fishing company Sapmer has ordered two freezer tuna purse seiners from Piriou shipyard in France, with the option of a third vessel.

The two 80m vessels will operate in the Indian Ocean, with delivery of the first due at the end of 2014 and the second at the beginning of 2015. They will be built at Piriou’s subsidiary Seas in Vietnam.

Pascal Piriou said, "We are really happy to have forged this strategic partnership with Sapmer, which will enable us to move forward together towards the Pacific. This order is an ideal opportunity to showcase our ships which opens up the market in the Pacific tuna fishing zone, since our prices are highly competitive compared with our Asian competitors due to the fact that the ships are simpler and are built in series in Vietnam."

The Piriou-designed vessels are complex ships, equipped with an innovative system designed to freeze and conserve tuna at -40°C (compared to -17°C on traditional tuna boats). This process enables a significant improvement in fish quality and consequently an increase in its value (Sashimi quality).

The new shape of the bow optimises ship stability and crew comfort and also increases stowage capacity in the hold compared with a bulb bow tuna vessel.

The propulsion is diesel and electric rather than conventional - the shaftline and propeller are driven by two electric motors. This system provides flexible energy management, simplified maintenance and fuel economies.

Piriou is also preparing to deliver the 90m freezer tuna purse seiner Belle Isle to Sapmer - the seventh tuna vessel that Piriou has delivered to Sapmer since 2009. The vessel was christened on 28 November in Vietnam and is Sapmer's second vessel registered in Mauritius Island where it will be based for its operations in the Indian Ocean.
