2019 marks the 10-year anniversary of Cermaq’s sustainability report, highlighting the company’s support for sustainable development and increased transparency in the salmon aquaculture industry.

Cermaq's business strategy is now aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its report looks back on the company’s key work, as well as addressing its approach to sustainability, GRI indicators and stakeholder engagement.

“When Cermaq started external assurance of its sustainability report, we were for many years the only company in our industry doing this,” said CEO Geir Molvik. “For us, these reports have been the basis for trust and transparent dialogue with our stakeholders.”

He added: “During this time, the industry as a whole has taken a number of steps forward on transparency, most significantly with the Global Salmon industry wide online reporting in 2015. It demonstrates the significance of sharing sustainability data and how this industry is now leading in transparency.”

2018 achievements

Cermaq’s sustainability report 2018 is now available. Highlights of the company’s work in 2018 include adopting a fish welfare policy and fish welfare indicators for its global operations, introducing new treatment procedure against SRS in Chile and opening a new processing plant in Steigen, Norway.

The new Seafood Stewardship Index (SSI) changes the focus of the sector from disclosure to performance, which Cermaq said it will welcome when introduced later this year. Developed by the World Benchmarking Alliance, the SSI is aimed at moving sustainable seafood production towards achieving the SDGs and will consist of 30 companies’ score cards, showing how and to what extent each company contributes to sustainable seafood production and trade, and an index ranking the companies from 1 to 30, based on their performance levels.
