Newage Transmissions of the UK launched their latest marine gearbox, the PRM 1750 at the London Boat Show. A statement from the company said it has a maximum torq ue of 1,750Nm and suitable for engines rated up to 457kW (620 bhp), coming in shallow or deep gear casing configurations, with standard ratios from 1.22:1 to 4.90:1.
Units also have integral SAE housings and can be supplied with trolling valve and clutched Power Take-Off (PTO) options; enabling them to meet the widest variety of commercial, workboat and pleasure applications.
They said it is derived from the successful PRM 1500 and developed as an
affordable and reliable alternative to Twin Disc, Self Changing Gears, Capitol and other drop centre gearboxes.
It has a twin countershaft design that is compatible with both left and right hand propeller rotations, making the transmission equally suitable for single or twin engine installations. It utilises maintenance-free, self-adjusting, oil-operated multi-disc clutches for reliability and in-service performance, and allows a maximum input torque to be transmitted continuously in either direction at speeds of up to 2,500 rev/min.
By using the same oil as for the engine there is no need for automatic transmission fluid and the response to control movements. Manufactured from high-grade cast iron, it is internally ribbed for extra rigidity and strength. Oil pump and hydraulic control valves are mounted externally for easy access and servicing.
The output shaft can be rotated continuously in neutral, eliminating the need for a prop-shaft brake when running with an engine shutdown. As an additional safeguard, the unit incorporates a mechanical locking device that will enable the vessel to be brought safely back to port in the unlikely event of hydraulic failure.
