A new aquaculture strategy called the ''Northland Aquaculture Development Strategy’ is due to be launched in New Zealand this week.

The new strategy is set to be launched by David Carter, the Minister for Primary Industries at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), Bream Bay, on Friday 9 November.
It has been developed over the last 12 months by the Northland Aquaculture Development Group (NADG) and aims to help achieve the goal set by the NZ government to have a $1bn aquaculture industry by 2025.
The group has five working groups - Finfish, Oyster, Greenshell Mussel, Freshwater and Paua - and their collective membership includes a who’s who of those already working in the local aquaculture sector including industry representatives and scientists.
The NADG wants to see Northland play a leading role in New Zealand’s aquaculture development through the use of innovation and technology.
To this end farmed kingfish is being promoted as a future potential star for the industry, along with the Greenshell mussel and the Northland stalwart – the oyster.
Other key targets for the group will be securing resource consents and funding for both land and sea areas by working closely with the market to prepare an investment proposal.
