The latest newbuild for the Norwegian static gear fleet is the 55.50 metre LOA, 13.20 metre breadth Veidar, designed by Rolls-Royce as a dedicated longliner/netter, and it started its fishing career netting with an excellent trip.

Mustad gear for new Veidar

Designed to process and freeze catches at sea, Veidar was built at the Simek yard in Flekkefjord for Veidar AS, based on the island of Godøy near Ålseund. As well as the design, Rolls-Royce also supplied the 1920kW Bergen Diesel C25: 33L6P main engine, the 550GHC reduction gear and the 72A1/4E-B/P-3000 propeller, as well as the TT1300 sidethruster, a UL901FP retractable thruster, Tenfjord SR-662FCP steering gear, the tank sounding and the Acon system.

The factory deck has been supplied by Optimar and the refrigeration system for the bank of plate freezers and the 916m3 fishroom is from MMC.

Veidar is laid out to alternate gilnetting and longlining at different seasons. Smådal Mekaniske supplied Veidar’s gill net system with a hauler and stackers located over the net bins aft, and Mustad delivered the latest 75,000 hook.

“This is one of the most modern and efficient freezer longliners in the world, and Veidar is fitted with the latest of autoline equipment delivered by Mustad Autoline,’ said Gro Tollefsrud Fjeld at Mustad.

“They carry about 75,000 hooks on board which makes high speed precision baiting and hauling with optimal pull-force key to success. The storage system for hooks and line is a hydraulic MagPacker, a strong stainless steel rack where the heavy magazines are moved in position for setting or hauling by a simple hand manoeuvre and a line press system is keeping the heavy magazines loaded with hooks and line in place. The whole process is closely monitored with Mustad Autoline LineController system.”

She added that the installation on board Veidar has been tailored to match the new vessel’s requirements.

“Being able to deploy reliable and efficient fishing equipment is the whole purpose of this vessel. To be certain that quality is maintained, all of the autoline equipment on board is supervised by Mustad Autoline’s technicians, and they also provide Veidar’s crew with training during the sea trials.”
