Just in time for Easter, Migros, the largest Swiss retailer, introduces the MSC ecolabel for sustainable fishing to its fresh fish counters in Switzerland.
“We are proud to be the first Swiss retailer offering fish and seafood with the popular MSC label on our fresh fish counters with an aim to double our sales of MSC certified products throughout 2009,” says Stefan Gygli, Category Manager Fish at the Migros Cooperative. Initially, the MSC label will be displayed on ten different fish species.
Cod, saithe, Alaska pollock, hake, hoki, albacore tuna, coldwater prawns, wild salmon, mackerel and nephrops are the MSC-labelled newcomers on Migros’ 160 fresh fish counters. The broad range on the counters is complemented by a comprehensive MSC-labelled range in Migros’ freezers. The cooperative was one of the first companies worldwide to commit to the MSC at the end of the 1990s and will further strengthen its focus on sustainability in the future: “MSC is the most well-known ecolabel for sustainable fishing and we will continue to expand our MSC-labelled range,” says Mr Gygli. “Since May 2008, we have been a member of the WWF Seafood Group Switzerland and have pledged to switch our entire fish and seafood offering to sustainable sources.”
