Built in 1966 as a stern trawler, Meaban was later converted into a longliner, and despite its age, this 33 metre LOA, 8 metre beam fishing vessel is a class act, landing around 900 tonnes of hake caught west of Scotland and Ireland every year to markets in Spain.
To keep Meaban up to standard, and its owners went to Serganosa SA in La Coruña to deliver a new generator set for powering all on board hydraulic pumps and lighting systems, with high reliability and provision of ample power as their key requirements.
With this in mind, Serganosa custom-built the new 185-kVA generator set, working closely with John Deere engine distributor Transdiesel S.A. from Madrid to combine a Leroy Somer LSA 46.2 alternator with a 9.0 litre John Deere PowerTechTM 6090AFM85 engine.

Ramón Reino Radio, managing director of Meaban’s operating company, is pleased that Serganosa worked directly with shipyard Talleres Cillero on the installation and testing of the set to ensure it met certification.
“I had complete confidence in the engines, in the Serganosa team, and in the shipyard to deliver to a high standard,” he commented. “The generator has been working perfectly in all weather situations. In fact, I’ve ordered two more John Deere–powered generator sets for other vessels in the fleet.”
