MAN B&W of Denmark has announced that its latest new generation medium-speed engine series is now launched for propulsion duties in the 1200-1900 kW power range.
In continuation of last year's introduction and sales debut of the L21/31 GenSet version, MAN B&W Diesel have again settled their 'no compromise' engine design philosophy by the separate introduction of a propulsion-optimised prime mover.
The L21/31's design pattern is similar to its very successful predecessor - the L27/38. The first stage was the GenSet-optimised engine version (presently 17 units are ordered), which is now followed by the Propulsion version. The propulsion engine is to a large extent based on similar basic engine components, but with a different power layout and the unique propulsion optimised front-end and aft-end design.
The 'boxes' at both ends of the engine are tailored to their specific purpose. The engine aft-end box carries the charge air cooler element, and acts at the same time as console for the turbocharger, which is positioned low and matched to reduction gearbox overhang -- for the benefit of compact, low and shortest possible engine room installations.
The front-end box is a unique NEW GENERATION engineering element featuring:
* Service friendliness and easy maintenance by simple plug-out/plug-in actions.
* Automatic full-flow lube oil filter offering efficient. cleaning and maximum safety
* All lube oil equipment is arranged in a safe closed circuit.
* Compactness and very short overall engine room installation length.
* Shipyard-friendly pipe connections optimally positioned on the sides of the box.
* Minimal foundation and installation work for auxiliary equipment.
* Integrated support bearing for an optional 100% front-end Power Take-Off.
Market scope
As prime mover in traditional propulsion systems, this 1200-1900 kW engine design will target coastal vessels, fishing vessels, small cargo and passenger vessels of all types. The priorities in these markets are reliable and efficient operation on marine diesel oil, light and heavy fuels.
The performance character of this 1000 rev's engine will, however, also appeal to the tugboat and workboat segment often operating with a number of various thrusters and propulsors. Especially the engines' good acceleration and manoeuvring properties result in smoke-free high torque output available over the entire load range.
With the MAN B&W Alpha concept, the engine will be supplied as an integrated part of The Genuine Propulsion Package, including in-house designed and tailored reduction gearbox, CP Propeller, Control, Monitoring and Safety systems. A concept, which offers not only a great number of operational life-cycle benefits to the owner -- but also in relation to the shipyards' handling and installation, costs can be reduced up to 10% due to the integrated package design.
New range of reduction gearboxes and CPP's
With the Genuine L21/31 Propulsion Package a new MAN B&W developed AMG18EV series of gearboxes and a new VBS 640 propeller series are being introduced. Together with the existing VBS 740 and VBS 860 propeller series, a very wide coverage of standardized and modularised propulsion solutions are ensured. The supply of the complete package will be available for first customer deliveries during autumn 2003. The engine will, however, be available from the middle of 2003
