Last summer, Karstensens Skibsværft, based in Skagen, Denmark, delivered the new and innovative fishing vessels M/S Christina E to the Norwegian shipping company Eivik & Sævik, based in Torvik, Bølandet, Norway.

Christina E is not a typical fishing vessel - as well as fishing the vessel can also operate as a research vessel and a supply vessel in the offshore industry. Having these capabilities the vessel is not as dependent on fishing quotas or the like, and can be used all year round.
The main engine of Christina E is a 9 M 32 MaK engine with a rating of 4500 kW. As auxiliary engines Christina E has three Cat engines, respectively two Cat C32 with ratings of 910 kW and a Cat C9 with a rating of 215 kW.
In an effort to lower the emissions all the engines have been equipped with catalysts. In addition all the engines have also been equipped with noise reduction technology.
In order to optimise the usability of the vessel all the engines have been setup to work as a hybrid. This means that the vessel will only use the main engine when fishing and operating at high speed. In most cases the auxilliary engines will provide sufficient power for propulsion. This is particularly suitable when the vessel will be operating a ROV.
