In a continuous effort to meet customer demands, Maersk Sealand has assisted in developing one of the world''s leading reefer technology. Some examples of value-adding innovations are the Magnum containers, the Super Freezer containers and the Blast Freezer units.
The Magnum containers were introduced this year to Maersk Sealand's fleet. The unit has been developed with the seafood industry in mind. It can maintain temperatures as low as - 35ºC/- 31ºF and a number of fatty fish and shell fish species are benefiting from the lower carriage temperature. Some examples are salmon, mackerel, shrimp and oyster.
Further, Maersk Sealand has developed the Super Freezer container specifically for transporting ultra low temperature cargo. It is able to maintain temperatures as low as -60°C/-76°F, which makes it an ideal solution for the carriage of frozen fish into the Japanese sushi and sashimi market. The cargo can be loaded processed, as fillets, or as whole fish.
The Super Freezer container offers limited re-handling of the product, which ensures optimal quality at destination. The products can be shipped in smaller quantities, compared with refrigerated vessels, yielding a higher market price and improved cash flow. And finally, you are able to reduce cold-storage costs and benefit from an extended season, because less cargo is required to make a shipment.
In order to be able to freeze fish to ultra low temperatures, Maersk Sealand has developed the Blast Freezer unit. This is a portable, flexible and economical solution to freezing fresh seafood products wherever it is required. This special unit is capable of freezing seven tons of fresh fish from a temperature of maximum 30°C/86°F down to -60°C/-76°F. This can be done within 24 hours at an ambient temperature of maximum 35°C/95°F.
The size of the Blast Freezer unit (the same as a 40' High Cube reefer) allows easy positioning to areas where freezing capabilities are needed. After freezing the cargo down to the required temperature, the fish is transferred into a Super Freezer container for direct delivery to the final destination. A Blast Freezer unit can be delivered with a power pack and an external fuel tank, making the equipment completely self-sustaining.
