The Australian fisheries minister Norman Moore has confirmed a new quota management system for the rock lobster industry will be implemented when the season begins in November.

The Fishing Industry Council says most fishers welcome the new quota management system for the rock lobster industry.

The Fishing Industry Council says most fishers welcome the new quota management system for the rock lobster industry.

Commercial fishers will be allowed a pre-determined proportion of the total allowable catch of 5,500 tonnes.

The minister has also announced the coming season will be extended by two months and finish at the end of August next year.

Moore said fishers will be given more flexibility to decide when to take their catch. He added that the system will be fairer and help ensure the sustainability of the fishery.

"It's one way of making sure that everybody gets a fair share and each person's entitlement is determined in advance," he said.

"They know what they can catch and they arrange their catch to meet the market and that avoids the race to fish which has always been a problem in fisheries that are open slather, such as we've had in rock lobster."
