2021 brought a rapid growth in Iceland’s farmed fish production and sector earnings, confirms new data compiled by Statistics Iceland.
According to its preliminary figures, a total 53,000 tonnes of farmed fish were harvested last year, an increase of 12,000 tonnes on the previous year, with Atlantic salmon accounting for 90% or 46,458 tonnes of the total production. The country also produced 5,390 tonnes of arctic char and 951 tonnes of rainbow trout.

The analysis also found that around 600 people were employed in Iceland’s aquaculture sector in 2021, an increase of 100 compared with the previous year.
At the same time, the turnover increased by ISK 5 billion to ISK 45 billion, and the export value of Icelandic aquaculture products climbed ISK 6 billion to ISK 35 billion.
Statistics Iceland further highlighted that the industry’s turnover has risen tenfold since 2010.
