The Kenyan Government has increased its agricultural budget and it seems that the aquaculture sector will benefit from a KES121m (US$1.28655m) share.
President Mwai Kibaki has said the measures are needed to boost the growth of the sector and ensure food security in the country.
While the bulk of the KES97 billion (US$1.03137bn) agricultural budget is going toward irrigation to ward off the recurrent dangers posed by drought, some is going toward the fish farming enterprise programme where it will be used for pond construction, purchase of fertilisers and fish feed.
Speaking at the Agricultural Society of Kenya Mombasa International Show: President Kibaki added, "We will also complete construction of the old town cold storage facility and fish market."
He called on fishermen and fish farmers from the region to redouble their efforts, increase their productivity and raise their income and living standards.
To further boost economic development in the coastal region, President Kibaki said his government is investing massive resources in infrastructure. "We are improving the road network and expanding airports to ensure that the region remains a hub of trade and commerce."
