Ziegra Ice Machines (UK) Ltd., has made Sandy West a happy customer with a StreamIce system on his vessel ''Virtuous''. His earlier problem had been buying ice before each trip.

The SI 1.500 TW ice machine is on the shelter deck, and produces 1,500kg of freshwater ship ice and 2,280 litres of 40 per cent density StreamIce. "The system has made a big difference to us," explained West. "Now our turnaround times are much quicker and our sailing weight is lower as we don't have to take tonnes of ice with us, we just make it as we go," and life for the crew is a little easier. They can choose the medium depending on the catch being boxed. For white fish, West puts chip ice in the bottom, then the product, then StreamIce on top. For prawn tails they use only StreamIce. Live prawns are rinsed with StreamIce to cool them quickly and they are packed only in chip ice. All the benefits for the same cost as buying in the ice, he says.
