Fishing on Atlanto-Scandian herring has just started and this was the first herring of the season to be landed in Vopnafjördur.

Magnús Róbertsson, factory manager at the Vopnafjördur plant, said the facility‘s new feeding-in system has been put into use for the first time for herring and mackerel, and production lines have been altered to make room for the new automatic filleting machines.

"We started production soon after Lundey arrived and it has gone well with no problems," Róbertsson said, adding that the herring is being processed into butterfly fillets.

Vessel Ingunn AK is now fishing on herring deep north east of Vopnafjördur, but the decision was taken to keep Faxi RE back from joining the fishery straight away as the annual Seamen’s Day celebration will be held this coming Sunday (6 June).
