Market conditions have changed significantly, according to industry body SFS, and the demand for fresh products has increased. This has taken place alongside a raft of technical developments that have made it possible for companies to meet this demand, in addition to increased investment opportunities that have made it possible to generate higher values.

The values of fresh demersal and flatfish products were worth ISK 71 billion in 2019, the highest level reached in both krónur and overseas currency terms. Fresh exports also represent the largest proportion of demersal and flatfish products exported at 37%, up from 16% in 2000.
