South East Trawl fishermen have been recognised for their work in improving their environmental performance in one of Australia’s largest and oldest fisheries.

The 82 trawl fishermen were trained in reducing the likelihood of seabird and seal interactions and improved reporting of incidents. Funded by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, the training also resulted in adopting codes of conduct to reduce the catch of eastern gemfish and Victorian snapper.

As a result, the South East Trawl Fishing Industry Association's (SETFIA) gained a commendation in the Excellence in Environmental Practice category in this year's Sydney Fish Market Seafood Excellence Awards.
