Recognising the increasing role of aquaculture to meet the ever growing demand for fish and seafood FAO is organising a Global Trade Conference on Aquaculture to address issues crucial to the sustainable development of this booming sector, which has a strong impact on food security and employment, as well as on the internationalisation of fish trade.
The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture has offered its full support for this event and has set up a steering committee to promote the conference and attract 200 of the leading company representatives under the topic of "Globalization and Responsible Sustainable Development of Aquaculture and Trade".
Taking into account the important role of aquaculture, FAO has strengthened its aquaculture programme which is reflected also in the new name of its “Fisheries and Aquaculture Department”. The Global Trade Conference on Aquaculture addresses all decision makers from industry and governments and seeks to develop a future scenario for the development of aquaculture worldwide. The fisheries sector as a whole will be more and more influenced by the increasingly dominant role of seafood from aquaculture.
