The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) is looking for candidates for its newly established award for innovative aquaculture farm practices.
The first Global Aquaculture Innovation Award programme, which is sponsored by nutritional food producer, Novus International, was announced today during GAA’s GOAL 2012 conference in Bangkok, Thailand. The programme aims to identify achievements in the aquaculture industry which help lead to sustainable aquaculture.
The award recognises innovative practices that overcome production challenges or reduce negative environmental or social impacts at aquaculture farms certified under the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) programme.
The GAA is looking for candidates and innovations for the award which cover any aspect of farm activities, including wetlands conservation, feed management, water quality management, effluent reduction, energy reduction, staff training, community relations, animal welfare and health and nutrition.
The award is open to all producers with active BAP certification. The winner will receive a plaque, an all expenses paid trip to GAA's GOAL 2013 conference and a US$1,000 prize. The winner will also get the chance to present the innovation at GOAL 2013.
In the future, GAA plans to extend the programme to additional sectors of the seafood value chain as well as efforts in areas of biodiversity protection, pollution reduction, waste minimisation and energy efficiency.
