Based on Reunion Island and founded in 1947, Sapmer pioneered fisheries in French Southern Ocean waters where it operates four freezer longliners fishing for Patagonian toothfish and a potter fishing for rock lobster. Sapmer began its activities in the tuna sector fifteen years ago and now operates nine freezer purse seiners freezing yellowfin and skipjack down to -40°C.

Sapmer offers tuna products such as loins, steaks, centre cuts, jars, cans and other products that are sold directly to the seafood trade or via its own Les Comptoirs Sapmer outlets.

“SAPMER has developed a company culture that prioritises sustainability and promotes its best practices through certification by independent recognised third parties. Men and women of Sapmer at sea and on shore are totally committed to a responsible and sustainable fishing approach,” said Paolo Bray, director of Friend of the Sea.

The Sapmer tuna fleet operates with 100% observer coverage under a programme operated by Bureau Veritas, one of the most demanding companies for audits and controls. The Sapmer Group complies with Dolphin Safe, FOS WILD and FAD Free certifications, is engaged in the Indian Ocean Fishery improvement project and is a participating company of the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) ,complying strictly to its conservation measures.
