Traditional wisdom boosts marine sustainability

Traditional knowledge of coastal communities can play a vital role in ensuring the safety and sustainability of India’s marine fisheries, said marine experts at a recent workshop held at the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute

Jointly organised by Ocean Centres India, UN Global Compact Network India and CMFRI, the workshop featured panel discussions on ’Safety and Sustainability in Fisheries and Aquaculture’ and ’Impacts and Challenges of the Port and Shipping Sector’.

Experts said that integrating fishermen’s traditional knowledge with scientific tools like satellite modelling and remote sensing could enhance localised weather warnings and monsoon forecasting, improving safety and fishing outcomes.
