India sets mariculture growth target

In a bid to meet India’s rapidly growing seafood demand, the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has set an ambitious target of achieving 2.5 million tonnes of mariculture production by 2047, a significant jump from the current 150,000 tonnes

Speaking at the CMFRI headquarters during the launch of a nationwide training programme for fish farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana (PM DDKY), CMFRI director Dr Grinson George emphasised the critical role of mariculture in the country’s future marine fisheries development.

India currently produces around 3.5 million tonnes from marine capture fisheries annually.
